What is Screen Printing

What is screen printing and why choose screen print over other textile garment print options?

WHAT IS SCREEN PRINTING?

Screen printing is a traditional process and involves pulling ink through a mesh stencil screen for each colour in the design. Each screen is aligned (registered) on our press to make sure all colours line up. We then print each colour in sequence onto the t-shirt until the final image builds. Due to the preparation time involved in the screen printing routine this process is more suited to orders of 20 prints or more.

Screen printing is the best option for accurate artwork reporduction with a high retail quality finish. We can achieve highly detailed prints, which are made to last and certainly won’t peel.

We screen print because we love it! We are passionate about t-shirt printing and put a lot of care and attention into producing the best quality, soft and most vibrant print possible.

At the begining of 2024 we upgraded from a 6 colour hand printing carousel after 10 years of “serving our apprenticeship and really learning our craft” and installed our first automatic screen printing machine. Which means we can now apply the skills we have earned over the course of ten years and provide high quality, highly detailed printing on a production level. Over the years we have refered to Flippin Sweet as a “humble print shop” but in 2024 we upgraded and prefer to consider ourselves a “high quality t-shirt micro factory”.

We produce our prints on a MHM X-Type which is a high end automated screen printing carousel, with exceptional registration (the ability to line up layers of your artwork, precisely and hold 100% of the time).

So we’re really using the best tools for the job to ensure we can provide you as a customer accurate and consistent print quality every time.

THE SCREEN PRINT PROCESS

Screen printing is a craft, a science and an art. Each step has to be carefully considered and prepared to ensure best print results. We have briefly outlined the various steps we take before printing your t-shirts, to give you a general overview.

1

ARTWORK SEPERATION

Your vector or high resolution artwork is broken down in to layers. Each layer is a separation of the colours/screens needed to build up the final print image.

2

FILM POSITIVES

We then output (print) the layers to individual film positives. The film positives are transparent sheets printed with a high density opaque black ink.

3

SCREEN COATING

We coat the mesh of the clean degreased screens using a photo sensitive emulsion which when exposed to uv light hardens and adheres to the mesh.

4

SCREEN EXPOSURE

The printed positives are taped and positioned on to the emulsion coated screens. The screens are placed in to our exposure unit which hardens the emulsion.

5

SCREEN WASHOUT

We take the screens to the washout booth, the area not exposed to the uv light (image printed on the positives) can then be washed out. This reveals the print image as a stencil.

6

TAPING UP

Once dry, the screens can be taped up along the inside edges (to ensure no ink spills out on to your garment) and any registration marks are covered ready to go to press.

7

PRESS REGISTRATION

Using the registration marks as a guide, we place each screen on our print carousel. We use the “micro-registration” adjusters to dial in the screens, ensuring the design lines up.

8

INK PREPARATION

We don’t stock any ink colours ready mixed other than White. This means for every order we mix just enough ink to complete the job in the colours we need, so little is wasted.

9

TEST SHIRT

We load each screen with a little ink and perform a test print on a recycled shirt. This way we can check all the screens line up and the final print is as expected.

10

LETS PRINT!

Once we’re happy with the test print, we fire up the driers, load your shirts and get cracking printing your full order of shirts.

WHAT TYPE OF INK DO WE USE?

WE PRINT WATERBASED AND PHTHALATE FREE INK

We screen print using a unique combination of waterbased and phthalate free plastisol ink, which produces a soft hand, lightweight finish while mainting an opaque, colour accurate and vibrant print finish on light or dark garments. We use high mesh counts and various techniques fine tuned over the years to ensure our finish printed product is light weight and has a satin finish. Waterbased inks are typically reserved for white/light garments but with the advancement in the ink industry over recent years we can now use high solid waterbased white as a base to really soften and reduce the weight of the overall print finish. The ink and print techniques we use are best suited to printing on to 100% cotton garments but polybelnds can be accodomated with the use of dye block underbases.

We understand the value of minimizing the effect our printing has on the planet. This is why we make significant efforts to keep our ink as Eco friendly as possible without compromise on quality. Not only do our inks look and feel great, they contain no phalates or plasticizers which also allows the use of Eco Friendly cleaning solutions. We can’t make the bold claim of being 100% eco friendly but we do make significant effort to be as eco conscious as possible.

We can produce vibrant colours on light or dark garments.
